Description
A delicious bourbon chicken recipe that’s easy to make and full of flavor.
Ingredients

- 1½ lbs boneless skinless chicken breasts, cut into bite-size pieces
- 1½ Tbsp cornstarch
- ¼ tsp kosher salt
- ¼ tsp black pepper
- 3 Tbsp vegetable oil, divided
- 3 cloves garlic, minced
- 1 Tbsp grated fresh ginger (or ¾ tsp dried ginger)
- ½ cup water
- ½ cup reduced sodium soy sauce
- ¼ cup bourbon
- ¼ cup reduced sodium chicken broth
- 3 Tbsp apple juice
- 2½ Tbsp ketchup
- 1 Tbsp rice vinegar (or apple cider vinegar)
- ½ cup packed light brown sugar
- ¼ tsp onion powder
- ¼ tsp red pepper flakes
- 1 Tbsp cornstarch (for slurry)
- 1½ Tbsp cold water (for slurry)
Instructions
- In a bowl, toss chicken with cornstarch, salt, and pepper. Set aside.
- In another bowl, whisk together water, soy sauce, bourbon, chicken broth, apple juice, ketchup, vinegar, brown sugar, onion powder, and red pepper flakes. Set aside.
- Heat 1½ Tbsp oil in a large skillet over medium-high heat. Add half the chicken in a single layer and cook 2–3 minutes without stirring. Flip and cook 2–3 minutes more. Remove and repeat with remaining oil and chicken. Set all chicken aside.
- In the same skillet, sauté garlic and ginger for 30 seconds until fragrant.
- Pour in the sauce mixture. Bring to a low boil, then reduce heat and simmer for 7–10 minutes to reduce.
- Mix cornstarch and water into a slurry. Add to the skillet and stir until sauce thickens.
- Return chicken to the skillet and toss to coat in the sauce. Simmer for 2–3 minutes until heated through and fully coated.
- Serve hot with rice, steamed veggies, or as an appetizer.
Notes
- This dish is best served immediately after cooking.
- Adjust the spice level by adding more or less red pepper flakes.
