Description

A delicious bourbon chicken recipe that’s easy to make and full of flavor.

Ingredients

Scale
  • lbs boneless skinless chicken breasts, cut into bite-size pieces
  • 1½ Tbsp cornstarch
  • ¼ tsp kosher salt
  • ¼ tsp black pepper
  • 3 Tbsp vegetable oil, divided
  • 3 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 Tbsp grated fresh ginger (or ¾ tsp dried ginger)
  • ½ cup water
  • ½ cup reduced sodium soy sauce
  • ¼ cup bourbon
  • ¼ cup reduced sodium chicken broth
  • 3 Tbsp apple juice
  • 2½ Tbsp ketchup
  • 1 Tbsp rice vinegar (or apple cider vinegar)
  • ½ cup packed light brown sugar
  • ¼ tsp onion powder
  • ¼ tsp red pepper flakes
  • 1 Tbsp cornstarch (for slurry)
  • 1½ Tbsp cold water (for slurry)

Instructions

  1. In a bowl, toss chicken with cornstarch, salt, and pepper. Set aside.
  2. In another bowl, whisk together water, soy sauce, bourbon, chicken broth, apple juice, ketchup, vinegar, brown sugar, onion powder, and red pepper flakes. Set aside.
  3. Heat 1½ Tbsp oil in a large skillet over medium-high heat. Add half the chicken in a single layer and cook 2–3 minutes without stirring. Flip and cook 2–3 minutes more. Remove and repeat with remaining oil and chicken. Set all chicken aside.
  4. In the same skillet, sauté garlic and ginger for 30 seconds until fragrant.
  5. Pour in the sauce mixture. Bring to a low boil, then reduce heat and simmer for 7–10 minutes to reduce.
  6. Mix cornstarch and water into a slurry. Add to the skillet and stir until sauce thickens.
  7. Return chicken to the skillet and toss to coat in the sauce. Simmer for 2–3 minutes until heated through and fully coated.
  8. Serve hot with rice, steamed veggies, or as an appetizer.
